The Artist (2011) : A review

Reviewing "The Artist (2011)" is a tribute to the filmgoer. It's a film about films. It's a film about silent films.

The story is set in Hollywood, 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and will eventually set his oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) it seems he sky's the limit, major movie stardom awaits for her. This film on film tells about their interlinked destinies.

This film won many of the major awards globally. Cannes film festival, Golden globes and Academy awards were given to these film. In france it was nominated to ten 'Cesar Awards'. "The Artist" has received the highest number of awards than any other french film in history.

Why I love "The Artist" is it's simplicity, humour and energy. In 2011 I was in a fresh state of mind. I was not exposed to many films. I watched "Singing in the rain (1952)". But this is different. This has Jean Dujardin and his as George Valentin you will never forget.

It's a film about the beauty of film.

Take your time to enjoy this films.

Love of films : Short film 3

This way up (2008)
[Animation, Short]
Adam Foulkes, Alan Smith

I will not comment on it's oscar worthiness but it's a very eerily haunting dark comedy animation with the simple plot of no respect for dead.

The beauty of short animations is they have the independence to manipulate animation and the creators have done that according to the theme.

A good short film.

Dimantha and MovieFreak

Moviefreak is my hobby. It's a blog which is more than 6 years old that reflects on my perception on my cinema. If you follow my new 3 other blogs there will be a reflection on depression and post - depression era's of my life.

This blog is my brain child of depression. After failing to participate in a law exam in 2012 May I got depressed and got sunk in films.

I watched around 4 to 5 films a day. I got addicted.

After 2013 where I shifted my career to business management and accounting I was afflicted with many bad habits including addiction to entertainment.

After 2015 July I changed with my internship. I started working on the academics and against my addictions. And by end of 2016 I have improved myself from removing from many bad habits.

But Moviefreak was my friend on utilizing my perception on cinema as a tool of building language skills, conceptual skills and reviewing.

By the end of 2016 personally I found this blog as the guiding light of increasing the perception of my addiction to cinema and how to overcome it positively.

The moviefreak has become one of the biggest projects of my life now. Though it has an accumulated hits over 1000 for only 6 years, I started marketing my blog on films since January 2017.

And I see a much more developed perception on cinema as well.

Stranger things : Season 01 (2016) - It's strictly personal

More like a rip-off to Super 8 (2011), but still you won't get any rip-off's for 80's classics like this, television series Stranger Things : Season 01 is an amazing homage to the 80's films with such style and specially it's techno music.

And why this becomes personal is as a childhood fanatic of young adult books of "R.L. Stine's Goosebumps" and "M.D. Spencer's Shivers" this is a dream come true.

Reminds me of the 80's and specially Steven Spielberg's E.T.

Sherlock ( Season 04) - 2017 : Downward spiral

Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock is a revelation of one of the most loved fictional characters in the world.

And it has been an amazing experience seeing Sherlock Holmes solving crimes in 21st century and they managed to pull this off stunningly in the first and second seasons.

Third season was okay.

The Abominable Bride (2015) which is the christmas special was also acceptable.

But the official Season 4 was a disaster.

Now let's go deeper.

Episode 01 : The six thatchers

London environment, loved characters for 6 years, but the deduction and the vision is overshadowed by the episodes visual flair and over-reliance on technology. But it's still Benedict's Sherlock and he's awesome as always.

Overall - 3.5/5

Episode 02 : The Lying detective

The intensity, dark humour, powerful and haunting anti-heros and Sherlock's traditional and master of a vision and deduction is established.

Overall - 5/5

Episode 03 - The final problem

Makes you feel bloated by unnecessary twists and expected solutions (you know Sherlock's not going to shoot anyone ?), "The final problem" disgraces the core concepts and plots of the tv series and become more of a shallow family drama to fill in the series.

Overall - 3/5

Exceptionally dissatisfying.

Arrival : Language, time and life

Denis Villeneuve is a modern day Hitchcock, his heart wrenching unique thrillers and deep rooted character based story arcs reminds of films we loved and we missed, but he makes them in his modern tradition.

His Prisoners (2013) and Enemy (2014) are very dark and is unique filmmaking, you only see in Denis's films itself.

Sicario (2015) takes deeper roots into human condition relating to crime and drug activities which is also an addition to his deep and darker cinematic film making style.

Arrival (2016) his latest film is a sci-fi based on an alien space craft appearance and it's communication through linguistics of the alien race translated by a language specialist Dr. Louise Banks played by Amy Adams. Her performance is remarkable.

The depth of substance of the film is commendable. Aspects of civilisation and humanity like language, time and life are analysed and put to the screen in an amazing way by the filmmakers.

This film is a Denis Villeneuve film with such expansion to his tradition. Unlike other films this is more filled with hope and love. He expands into the aspects of his slow swiftly camera work rather than being haunting like in his previous films into being a more poetic and like song of nature and humanity. It's a real upgrade in his tradition in my perspective.

He explores femininity in his latest two films giving major roles to female leads.

Overall - 3.5/5

Breaking Bad : Season 01 - The soul? There's nothing but chemistry here.

This is considered as one of the greatest television shows of history. Critics and fans alike love this show.

Me personally was blown away by it.

It is created by one of the "X-Files" creators, so there is no surprise.

But this is one of the most uniquely dark television drama on a man's journey to perdition and we see it's inception.

We see madness, internal struggle, violence and drugs.

This reminds of Tarantino, Rodriguez, Ritchie and Joe Carnahan. A dark comic take on violence.

Bryan Cranston as Walter White is amazing. One of the best television experiences so far.

Overall - 4/5

Love of films : Short films 2

With Michael Dudok De Wit creating his "The Red Turtle (2016)" as his major feature animation film, I thought of watching some of his earlier short animation films.

These are very unique to him. You'll notice when reading the relevant reviews.

The monk and the fish (1994) [Animation, Short, Musical]
Michael Dudok de Wit

Atmosphere, music and animation reminds of the childhood cartoon memories in the 90's. Reminds of "The princess and the cobbler (1993)".

Animation is very beautiful. It looks like a simple watercolor art making it a eye friendly art.

Music with the art makes it a beautiful cartoon because each and every movement of art have a flute or traditional music making it an amazing work of animation.

Overall a more poetic and artful depiction of short animation on obsession and a very simpler perspective to it.

The short film video I watched which is available in Youtube.com (search it from the title) has a description with the director where he discusses the art, music amd story boards giving us a broader perspective on art.

Father and Daughter (2000) [Animation, Short, Drama]
Michael Dudok de Wit

This short animation won the academy award for best short film in 2001.

Like his beautiful animation in the 1994, "The monk and the fish" reflects upon the unique heartfelt childlike animation of the director, but this time rather than humour it deeply roots to the human element with music and his expansive landscape artwork.

In this his father leaves her daughter to sea ad her daughter daily visits the ocean.

We see the reflections of sorrow embedded to the animation with music and art. The art movements awakens the emotions.

A moment where a filmmaker flourishes in his own tradition, this film is one of them.

Elements like "Time" is grasped in a majestic manner by the film maker.

The aroma of tea (2006) [Animation, Short]
Michael Dudok de Wit

An experimentation of infusion of Mr. Dudok de wit's tradition of animation in a massive way expanding the embedded nature of animation with great violin music into extreme abstraction of his animation is commendable.

In my opinion in the outer perspective this short animation may reflect on the preparation of tea and a microscopic vision of one tiny tea particle moving around the hot tea water.

Or like always this may reflect the smaller and tiny nature of human life as depicted in his other short films in a niche or micro perspective in my opinion in comparison to the external world or universe as per the animator.

The purpose of watching these were to have a great experience watching "The Red Turtle" (2016).

Ghostbusters (2016) : A Paul Feig style reboot for the franchise

Now this is a gamble, building a most loved film franchise from the old generation for the future generation with a director's own film making style.

This gamble was the reason for the global criticism for this film as well.

Though that's the case, I personally love Paul Feig films. The Heat (2013) and Spy (2015) was amazing.

And this also is an amazing comedy with Paul Feig's comic charms and quirks.

I agree this does not live upto the standard of the older films but still a really good film when you filter it with the Paul Feig perspective.

Overall - 3.5/5

Criminal : An attempt to reboot the sci-fi action genre

With an amazing cast from both the past and current in hollywood, Criminal (2016) attempts to build the atmosphere of films like Universal Soldier (1992), Minority Report (2002) and Paycheck (2003).

It comes out okay for me. It was a good film.

Good action sequences. Typical enemy. Bad turned good anti-heroes. Giant screens and CIA stuff.

Not a bad film.

Overall - 3.5/5

Zootopia : The most original Animation film of 2016

This is one of the funniest and loved animation films of 2016 globally.

It's a personal favourite as well.

I'm not going to spoil it to you.

Waste your time in it.

It's worth it.

Overall - 4/5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles : Out of the shadows - Action packed Nostalgia

Now let's set the ground rules here.

You're not watching TMNT for substance or art.

It's for martial arts, action and comedy. It's a very tightly woven subculture this turtle's world and it is a personal childhood favourite franchise. Soo it's going to be just fun.

TMNT (2014) was a well made action film. But not story wise when your a TMNT fan since a kid.

The same mistake is carried forward in this film as well. Only thing that keeps us in the film is the characters introduced.

Bepop and Rocksteady looked good. But the characters sucked.

Now this is the biggest flaw in the modern TMNT (2014 - ...) franchise. The characters are felt like they want to be the character, but not the character. Some where along the line they have lost the authenticity of the characters and there humour.

Anyway like the first it was a good action film.

Overall - 3/5

Warcraft : Feels like rain

Warcraft (2016) was based on a video game which is 20 years old and still loved among video game fanatics globally.

But I never played it. So the criticism by game fans and critics of making injustice to the video game's universe by the filmmaker's is invalid to me.

So as film fanatic this was kind of like a drizzle to the fantasy film genre in a long time. Besides the Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit franchise there were not many fantasy films in the modern context.

The benchmark LOTR kept was intense and hard to achieve for another fantasy film but this tries okay with new innovative CGI and story arcs.

The characters and emotions are flat. But that's what fantasy is.

A really good fantasy action film.

Overall - 3.5/5

Ted 2 : A really funny sequel

Ted 2 (2015) though many critics hated was a personal favourite film of mine.

It was the film with a much more expanded story and comedy.

What makes you love this film is it's directorial style which is unique to Seth MacFarlane.
He makes it very funny referring to the american media and culture in a satirical way. Some of it's characters are so fun it is like comedy genre when it reminds you of the Family Guy and it's funny and quirky perspective way of looking at the comedy.

Like the prequel this is soo much fun.

But it is not for everyone.

Overall - 3.5/5.

Star Trek Beyond : Goes Beyond

Star Trek Beyond (2016) is the third installment of the modern Star Trek franchise re-boot and it continues it's streak of success in the film series.

Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek : Into Darkness (2013) were really good Sci-fi fantasy made by J.J. Abrams which were extremely strong respecting the roots of the previous films universe as well as building an alternate universe for the new films to continue.

And the new installment though from a new director Justin Lin (Furious 6) establishes the same style and entertainment from the franchise the viewers expect.

The expansion of the universe through colourful and deep characters is innovative.

My personal observation was the amazing action sequences and the cinematography.

Overall - 3.5/5

Jungle Book : Jon Favreau has a thing for children films

2016's Jungle Book is Jon Favreau establishing himself as a talented filmmaker in his own way.

Elf (2003) was his first which I loved personally. It was a really good Christmas film with wit and humor.

The Jungle Book also has the same structure making him a master in his own genre.

Characters from the loved book are built very naturally and closed to the heart and it is amazing.

The storytelling is suspenseful as well as lovely. Through Kaa and King Louie he builds on a perspective storytelling reminding of ELF.

Must see for anyone who loves children films and especially Jon.

Overall - 4/5

Love of Films : Short films 1

If you love moving things in screens and if they touch your heart.... you love cinema.

Animated short films are a media of quick entertainment for viewers.

So I'll be having a special short films analysis like this.

Rejected (2000) [Animation, short, comedy] Don Hertzfeldt

A hilarious collection of animated television commercials that were rejected because of their creator's failing grip of sanity.

All these short cartoons reflect the directors' glorious retarded and sort of dreamlike visions in a sarcastic, absurd, violent, abstract and surreal.

His anti-commercial and vague analysis on consumerism is hard to understand but it is definitely against it.

The more the commercials go more darker and anti-consumeristic it becomes.

The ending creates "Rejected(2009)" a combined short animations of films together ending it a more powerful and as usually with extreme absurdity but the paper tearing creates a combination of reality and animation together something you will see in a short animation film.

Overall - 3.5/5

Logorama (2009) [Animation, Short] François AlauxHervé de CrécyLudovic Houplain

Logorama is a homage to american cinema and culture combined with violence, comedy, vulgar language and sex.

A whole new experience for marketers and film goers.

Suicide squad : Hit and miss

Suicide squad (2016) was the third installment for the DC extended cinematic universe connecting with Batman V Superman : Dawn of Justice (2016), would have been an amazing cinematic experience seeing it's cast, budget and crew but sadly it's a hit and miss. And also story wise.

The story is flat and unemotional. The DC extended universe did the same mistake with Man of steel (2013).

There is soo much explosions and gun fights but no real experience. Only thing that keeps the film running is Will Smith's Deadshot performance.

And after Heath Ledgers master of a performance as Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), Jared Leto was expected to with a higher benchmark.

Since he is extremely talented and the teasers showed a different joker, expectations of the fans were extrelmely high.

Sadly we have 10 minutes of an idiot of a performance, he is more of a gangster than a mastermind criminal sociopath we see in the Joker character arc in the comics, cartoons and past films.

Harley Quinn by Margot Robbie was highly anticipated but also less performed. She's  too funny and less action.

David Ayer is a good director. Harsh times (2005), Street Kings (2008) and End of Watch (2012) are really good films.

Sabotage(2014) and Fury(2014) are made in the Suicide squad formula reflecting on a set of different character arcs working together to a common goal, which makes the viewers expectation for Suicide Squad extremely high.

But sadly like "Sabotage(2014)" this fails spectacularly.

The connectivity to the DC Extended universe is the other only thing that kept the film alive.

Overall - 2.5/5

Jason Bourne : Deviated

Bourne film series was a unique action film series which was made with style and suspense which was unique to itself.

Many of the films were amazingly structured it makes it so hanged to the film till the end.

Now this deviates with Bourne Legacy (2012). Now since it reprises new characters we can tolerate.

Usual Bourne films are filled with mystery and JB or Jason Bourne was never a story driven character, he survives. Like the viewer of the film character himself is confused makes it a mutual experience.

Now this is deviated in the new installment. He gets to remember things and he becomes obsessed with finding his past, and true.... that is what anyone would do.

But the problem is when you go revealing the past we need old characters and we less in this movie, but what we see is a whole new universe of CIA and global espionage. Which previous films never had. JB never was a hero. He was a runner.

Here he becomes idealistic a more objective driven. And yet the film concludes with no answers.

Action sequences lacked the uniqueness the prior films had. More like watching a typical action film Like "Taken (2008)".

Anyway it's JB he survived things for 2 decades giving the viewers the thrill of a lifetime and this deviationis not a big deal.

But it really screwed the stories arc.

Hope they'll recover the story in coming installments.

Overall - 3.5/5

Christmas specials for 2017

During the christmas holidays I watched a series of films related to seasonal vibes.

Now let's put it all out.

The Night Before (2015)

The Night Before (2015) is a real christmas treat. It's got all the fun seasonal vibes mixed with adultery jokes. References to all american christmas stuff makes it more enjoyable. Not that I'm an expert about american culture. But the references to Die Hard (1988) and other christmas films makes this an amazing experience because I love christmas films.

Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie is an amazing combination for the film.

A personal favourite christmas film.

Overall - 4/5

Bad Santa (2003)

An extreme end to christmas comedy genre. It's soo vulgar it makes you puke. It's soo dark and makes you laugh to things you never wants to laugh but you'll still laugh anyway.

It's innovative cinematic style that embeds Tarantino, Ritchie and many darkly comic film makers makes this a unique gem of a film.

Characters are amazing. Style and film making is exceptional. Still it's a cinematic experience. And a fresh one at that.

Overall - 3.5/5

Bad santa 2 (2016)

Bad santa 2 tries to bring back the old experience of the outstanding predecessor but falls short.

Not bad.

But the innovativeness and the dark humour was a bit bland.

Still when you love the character there is always something to it.

Overall - 3/5

Krampus (2016)

This is a reminder of the B movie horror genre from the 80's and the 90's. Why you love them is they remind you of your child hood. They contain puppets and stop motion for monsters and which makes the film more realistic than CGI.

And Krampus (2016) have made there monsters with the less CGI reminding you of the old christmas and halloween films like Gremlins (1984).

The story, plot, jump scares and the structure overall personally is awesome for me due to it's reminder of the old traditional monster flicks.

Overall - 3.5/5

Tim Burton's The nightmare before christmas (1993)

Now the "Tim Burton's" is a very significant word in the title because it reflects on the style and substance of his film making but actually most of the work was done by the Director Henry Sellick.

This is based on the characters of Tim whom I personally love because when you watch a film it reminds you of a different and a unique world of Tim Burton and his world is relaxing and captivating.

Likewise this is the same. Though the credits are different the film is amazingly structured and we get the seasonal vibes.

Beautifully structured cinematic universe within the world of Jack Skellington and his crew and also the interconnectivity with other seasons and earth makes this a beautiful film.

Overall - 3.5/5

Rudolph : The red nosed reindeer (1964)

This is a traditional film for christmas based on the christmas fantasy of Rudolph which was expanded into many characters.

A personal favourite. It's a very good kids film for christmas reminding of the christmas and the seasonal vibes.

Overall - 3/5
