Fin / The End

This would be my concluding paragraphs of the MovieFreak.blogspot.com.

The idea of film reviewing came to me in 2010.

This includes a sketched document being digitized into the blog for finalising this series of my final words on the love of films.

This was written in 29th September, 2010.

Short Critique

Recent movies I watched.

Atonement - 8/10 [Execution/Substance/Cinematography]
Boondock Saints - 7/10 [Execution]
Boondock Saints 2 : All Saint's Day - 6.5/10 [Execution]
American History X
Constant Gardner

I have this psycho mentality which makes me fantasising the things I recently do good. And I do it over and over again. (I mean fantasising.) Same with movies. Because that's the only thing I do good. It makes me loose focus of ordinary life. So I thought of writing a small review on every movie I watch. So this "dreaming" will be at least be recorded in some place more effectively.

American History X - 8.5/10

A movie of a great emotional level. Powerful acting performances and very honestly revealing the truth to it's audience, this movie kept me grabbed from beginning to the end. Edward Norton was unforgettable. Amazing cinematography, true environment of the middle class families which reminds us where the true humanity should lie and focused.

Constant Gardner - 7/10

Powerful theme and a very effective in showing it. Unforgettable film making. Amazing camera work, perfect execution by the filmmaker. But as the theme which has being highly talked among filmmakers makes this a bit common. Some characters of the movie should have been adjusted. Like "Sandy".

The Imaginarium of Mr. Tim Burton

Timothy Walter Burton (born in 1958) or Mr. Tim Burton is an American film director, producer, artist, writer and animator.

He is famous for his dark, gothic, eccentric, quirky, animated musical, biographical, horror fantasy, blockbuster, fantasy drama, Sci-fi and superhero films.

Burton has worked repeatedly with Johnny Depp, with musician Danny Elfman, Actress Helena Bonham Carter in many films.

The title of this article, "The Imaginarium of Mr. Tim Burton" has a unique word.

The word imaginarium refers to a place devoted to the imagination. There are various types of imaginaria, centers largely devoted to stimulating and cultivating the imagination, towards scientific, artistic, commercial, recreational or spiritual ends.

The word was exposed to me from the film maker Mr. Terry Gilliam (born in 1940), American-born british screenwriter, film director, animator, actor, comedian and member of the monty python comedy troupe.

Gilliam has directed 12 feature films.

He directed "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)".

He started his career as an animator and strip cartoonist. He joined Monty Python as the animator of their works, but eventually became a full member and was given acting roles. He became a feature film director in the 1970's. Most of his films explore the theme of imagination and it's importance to life, express his opposition to bureaucracy and authoritarianism, and feature characters facing dark or paranoid situations.

Both filmmakers share unique traits.

The title will reflect on the both director's devotion in embracing imagination and creativity.

But in this article Tim Burton and his film career will be discussed.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) was released as his first feature film. Since that film Mr. Tim Burton maintained his unique artistic approach in conveying imagination based on his tradition. Beetlejuice (1988) also maintained his artistic style and witty humour.

Batman (1989) was his breakthrough superhero adaptation enabling him to penetrate blockbuster films. When the film opened in June 1989, it was backed by the biggest marketing and merchandising campaign in film history at the time, and became one of the biggest box office hits of all time, grossing well over US$ 250 million in the US alone and US$400 million worldwide.

Edward Scissorhands (1990) considered the most renowned and powerful reflections of his filmmaking talent fused with humanity which many critics claim it to be his best film.

Batman Returns (1992) sequel to Batman (1988) was also a financial success and also created a polarized fan base on love / hate movie following for the Tim Burton's 2nd superhero film.

Ed Wood (1994) is one of my personal favourite films as well as his greatest depictions on biographical filmmaking.

Later with his creativity fused in his artistic traits Tim Burton made Mars Attacks!(1996), Sleepy Hollow(1999), Planet of the Apes(2001), Big Fish(2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory(2005), Corpse Bride(2005), Sweeney Todd : The Demon Barber of the Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland(2010), Dark Shadows(2012), Frankenweenie (2012), Big eyes(2014) and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) in his three decade long film making career.

Like many of my articles related to film making and film directors, they reflect upon Hollywood filmmakers who did not win academy awards for best director or any other category in there career. But that have not made these filmmakers to change there artistic style of film making.

Mr. Tim Burton is also in the same category.

One of my personal observations as a film fan is, Mr. Tim Burton's reflection of afterlife in his films. Beetlejuice (1988), Sleepy hollow (1999), Big fish(2003), Corpse Bride(2005), Dark Shadows(2012) and Frankenweenie (2012) have reflected afterlife in a very artistic and philosophical manner.

So finally this article is paying my personal tribute as a film fan to a filmmaker in taking the risk of innovation and imagination over the market or the audience's requirement to reflect on cinema and film as a personal statement.

Marvel V DC

Marvel and DC are two of the most famous global comic book brands and they have now extended their entertainment into films.

My discussion in this article is on the impact of Marvel and DC to the global and local contexts into many various micro and macro level areas.

Many of Sri Lankan fans like myself have not exposed to the comic books but I can guarantee are big fans of the films.

Recently since 2016 and 2017 Comic-con event has been organised in Sri Lanka, exposing fans into many dimensions like reading comic books, cosplaying, buying merchandise and showing homage through art or other medias.

DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros. It was founded in 1934. It's headquarters is located in Burbank, California, United States.

Marvel Comics is owned by Marvel Entertainment, LLC. It was founded on 1939. It's headquarters is located in New York, United States.

DC Comics and it's major, longtime competitor Marvel comics (acquired in 2009 by the Walt Disney company, Time Warner's [ Warner Bros.] main competitor) together shared 70% of the american comic book market in 2016.

In August 2016, Marvel held a 30.78% share of the comics market, compared to it's competitor DC Comics 39.27% share.

Since like many Sri Lankans, I prefer to discuss the cinematic universe because like many I've always been a cinephile.

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are american media franchises used centered on superheroes and comic books published by there name.

MCU is a shared universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, independently produced by Marvel studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. DCEU is also a shared universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, distributed by Warner bros. pictures, based on characters that appear in publications by DC Comics.

After the release of The Avengers in May 2012, Tom Russo of Boston.com noted that aside from the occasional "novelty" such as Aliens vs. Predator (2004), the idea of a shared universe was virtually unheard of in Hollywood. Since that time, the shared universe model created by Marvel Studios has begun to be replicated by other film studios that held rights to other comic book characters. In April 2014, Tuna Amobi, a media analyst for Standard & Poor's Equity Research Services, stated that in the previous three to five years, Hollywood studios began planning "mega franchises" for years to come, opposed to working one blockbuster at a time. Amobi added, "A lot of these superhero characters were just being left there to gather dust. Disney has proved that this [approach and genre] can be a gold mine." However, with additional studios now "playing the mega franchise game", Doug Creutz, media analyst for Cowen and Company, feels the allure will eventually die for audiences: "If Marvel's going to make two or three films a year, and Warner Brothers is going to do at least a film every year, and Sony's going to do a film every year, and Fox [is] going to do a film every year, can everyone do well in that scenario? I'm not sure they can.

The above is a market and economic perception of the relevant Marvel and DC film's impact to the film industry.

Culturally and socially there is a strong fan following globally for both franchises and I believe it can be evident in Sri Lanka due to the love for these films in the local context. And even independent global filmmakers also attempt to penetrate the film through superhero genre's. Even bollywood and russian films have extended into this genre.

Overall this two battle among the franchises have been able to transform an industry impacting globally changing economic, social and cultural paradigms.

Gordon Gekko and Hannibal Lector

The impact of cinema on society is the message it gives. Even though many films carry fictional storylines, characters, and even worlds, the message is universal.

In modern Sri Lankan cinema films like Bambara Walalla (2009) and Mille Soya (2004) carries fictional characters but universal themes that are close at heart for any Sri Lankan citizen.

Characters like Pradeep played by Mr. Mahendra Perera in Mille Soya and as Mr. Mel in Bambara Walalla are considered great cinematic achievements in acting of fictional characters that is still remembered by many Sri Lankan film fans due to its true depiction of human nature.

The use of some fictional characters has become enigmatically established among the fans due to its reflection of human nature.

In this blog post, I would like to discuss two fictional characters who portray villains in their cinematic universes. Those two characters have become iconic reflections of the dark side of human nature.

Hannibal Lector and Gordon Gekko are two of the darkest and weirdest reflections of human nature. They are from different films. They reflect different character traits and evils. But there is one similarity. I will come to that later.

Dr. Hannibal Lector is a character in a series of suspense novels by Thomas Harris. He was based on a real-life Mexican doctor the writer met in the 1960s who is considered a serial killer and a psychopath.

Lector was introduced in the 1981 thriller novel Red Dragon as a forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial Killer. The novel and its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs, feature Lector as one of the primary antagonists after the two serial killers in both novels. In the third novel, Hannibal, Lector becomes a protagonist. His role as the antihero occurs in the fourth novel, Hannibal Rising, which explores his childhood and development into a serial killer.

The first film adapted from the Harris novels was Manhunter (based on Red Dragon) which features Brian Cox as Lector, spelled "Lecktor". In 1991, Anthony Hopkins won an academy award for his portrayal of the character in The Silence of the Lambs. He would reprise the role in Hannibal in 2001 and in a second adaptation of Red Dragon in 2002 under the original title.

The NBC Television series Hannibal debuted in 2013 and focuses on the development of the relationship between Lector and Will Graham, an FBI profiler. In the series, Lector is portrayed by actor Mads Mikkelson, who won a Saturn award for his performance.

In 2003, Hannibal Lector (as portrayed by Hopkins was chosen by the American Film Institute as the #1 movie villain. In June 2010, Entertainment Weekly named him one of the 100 greatest characters of the last 20 years.

I personally never read the novels. But I watched all the films that reflected Hannibal Lector besides Michael Mann's adaptation. I couldn't even follow up the new television series.

Personal observation of mine in this fictional character is the depiction of menace, sociopathy, and psychopathy fused with knowledge, love, and heart. He is very elegant. He is an all-round performer
in all of his career and among people. But in his personal life, Dr. Hannibal Lector brings out his true demons into practicality. His guilt about the childhood crime he committed without knowledge and intent will lead to his psychopathy which is described throughout the film series. This is a darker vision on the human element throughout the eyes of a psychopath. The film depicts the unproductive politics, backstabbing, and competition in the government service bureaucracy. And also reflects the personal struggles of ordinary people. The filmmakers create a question in the mind of the audience on the dark side of each human being's mind. Overall he's one of the scariest psychopaths in the fictional world, but his observations and quotes unlock the audiences and the character's mind to view the world into a more darker and more scarier way.

The following quotes reflect into the dark side of the character.

The Silence of the lambs (1991)

H.L. - Look for severe childhood disturbances associated with violence. Our Billy wasn't born a criminal, Clarice. He was made one through years of systematic abuse. Billy hates his own identity, you see, and he thinks that makes him a transsexual. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying.

Hannibal (2001)

H.L. - People don't always tell you what they are thinking. They just see to it that you don't advance in life.

Red Dragon (2002)

H.L. - [In the final letter to Will] My dear Will, you must be healed by now....on the outside at least, I hope you're not too ugly. What a collection of scars you have. Never forget who gave you the best of them, and be grateful, our scars have the power to remind us that the past was real. We live in a primitive time, don't we Will ? Neither savage nor wise. Half measures are the curse of it, any rational society will either kill me or put me to some use. Do you dream much, Will ? I think of you often. Your old friend, Hannibal Lector.

Hannibal Rising (2007)

Grutas - Answer me this. Would you have fed me to your little sister because you loved her?
H.L. - Yes.
Grutas - There. There you have it. Love. I love myself that much and I will never apologize to you.

Gordon Gekko is the other fictional character I would like to discuss but he is completely different from Dr. Hannibal Lector. He is a corporate shark, he is a narcissist and a sociopath in the workplace. He's ambitious and will do anything to have what he wants. He is a corporate criminal. A white collar criminal. He reflects on the darkest aspects of the human mind through corporate greed, insider trading, junk bond trader and stock speculator for his personal gains. He will ignore people losing jobs or salaries for his high-risk market deals.

Gordon Gekko is a fictional character in the 1987 film Wall Street and it's 2010 sequel Wall Street: Money never sleeps, both directed by Oliver Stone. Gekko was portrayed by actor Michael Douglas, whose performance in the first film won him an Oscar for best actor.

Co-written by Stone and screenwriter Stanley Weiser, Gekko is claimed to be loosely based on several actual financiers, including Stone's own father Louise Stone and corporate raider Asher Edelman. According to Edward R. Pressman, producer of the film, "originally, there was no one individual who Gekko was modeled on," he adds "but Gekko was partly Milken (Michael Milken)", who was the "Junk Bond King" of the 1980s.

In 2003, the American Film Institute named Gordon Gekko No. 24 on its top 50 movie villains of all time.

Gekko has become a symbol in popular culture for unrestrained greed (with the signature line, "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good"), often in fields outside corporate finance.

On September 25, 2008, Michael Douglas, acting as a UN ambassador for peace, was at the 2008 session of the United Nations General Assembly.

On September 25, 2008, Michael Douglas, acting as a UN ambassador for peace, was at the 2008 session of the United Nations General Assembly. Reporters sought to ask him off-topic questions about Gekko. He was asked whether he "bore some responsibilities for the behavior of the greed merchants who had brought the world to its knees." Trying to return to the topic, Douglas suggested that "the same level of passion wall street investors showed should also apply to get rid of nuclear weapons."

Douglas was also asked to compare Nuclear Armageddon with the "financial Armageddon on wall street", after one reporter inquired, "Are you saying, Gordon, that greed is not good ?" Douglas stated, "I'm not saying that, and my name is not Gordon, It's a character I played 20 years ago."

On October 8, 2008, the character was referenced by Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd in his speech, "The children of Gordon Gekko" concerning the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Rudd stated "It is perhaps time now to admit that we did not learn the full lessons of the greed-is-good ideology. And today we are still cleaning up the mess of the 21st Century Children of Gordon Gekko.

On July 28, 2009, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone cited Gekko's 'Greed is good' slogan in a speech to the Italian Senate, saying that the free market had been replaced by a greed market, and also blamed such a mentality for the 2008 - 2009 financial crisis.

The greatest villain of the world as per this character is not the criminals we label as murderers, psychopaths or rapists. I'm not trying to justify that the latter is good. But white-collar criminals can be the root cause for the creation of the latter. It is like a vicious circle in the world. There is a solution through proper regulation of the free market by the involvement of the government.

But this is hard and it will require great strength to transform this.

I would like to bring down some quotes from the two movies this character was depicted.

Wall Street (1987)

G. G. - I don't throw darts at a board. I bet on sure things. Read Sun-Tzu, The Art of War. Every battle is won before it is ever fought.

G. G. - It's all about bucks, kid. The rest is conversation.

G. G. - Greed captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

G.G. - Jesus! if this guy owned a funeral parlor nobody would die!

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010)

G.G. - Payback. Except I'm not in that business anymore, because the one thing I learned in jail is that money is not the prime asset in life. Time is.

G.G. - Someone reminded me I once said: "Greed is good". Now it seems it's legal. Because everyone is drinking the same Kool-Aid.

G.G. - Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs? They get slaughtered.

G.G. - Money is a bitch that never sleeps.

G.G. - Idealism kills every deal.

The two characters in these films are a darker and a stronger vision of the worst evils that exist in the world. There conflicted ideologies, lifestyle, quotes, perception, and even the body language stimulates fear and sense of scare in the mind of the audiences. These fictional characters are the reflection of a dark side of humanity many fear to face.

Therefore the filmmakers have created a strong and powerful depiction of the characters to go beyond and understand the true nature of human existence and it's dark side.

Screenwriter, Director and Producer

Generally, director, producer, and screenwriter are the main elements of filmmaking who are the ones behind the film camera making the celluloid dream come true.

Producers focus on the public, financial needs of the film and good quality of the film.

Director's focus on the total control of creativity pre and post designs and production of the films.

Screenwriters are the ones who write the story.

Filmmakers need to be established in a manner in which there is synergy among each of the relevant parties who are mentioned above.

Many of the Hollywood's greatest talents usually conducts and plays all these three roles in pre-production and post-production.

(01) Steven Spielberg
(02) George Lucas
(03) Martin Scorsese
(04) Quentin Tarantino
(05) Stanley Kubrick [1928 - 1999]
(06) Woody Allen
(07) Mel Brooks
(08) Oliver Stone
(09) Francis Ford Coppola
(10) Alfred Hitchcock [1899 - 1890]
(11) David Lynch
(12) J.J. Abrams
(13) Tim Burton
(14) Ben Affleck
(15) Billy Wilder [1906 - 2002]
(16) Paul Haggis
(17) Ridley Scott
(18) Orson Welles [1915 - 1985]
(19) Ron Howard
(20) Guillermo Del Toro
(21) Christopher Nolan
(22) Peter Jackson
(23) James Cameron

In the Sri Lankan context, there is Mr. Somarathna Dissanayake who directs films and his wife Mrs. Renuka Balasuriya who produces his films is a scenario where a collaboration is existent.

An obvious scenario is that the writer and director may be the same person. In this case the lines between the writing and directing stages as much more blurred. The director may also perform any of the other roles themselves, such as actor, producer, editor, cinematographer.

The writer and producer may be the same person, Tim Burton is the producer for Nightmare Before Christmas, which he also wrote the story for, though Henry Selick directed and there was also an additional credit for the screenplay.

The writing process may be very collaborative with many people on the team involved throughout the process. Anyone can be or could be involved in the writing stage, from the writer and Director to any of the other creative team such as DOP (Director Of Photography), editor and producer. This is how "The Usual Suspects" was created for instance.

The producer may be the 'boss' of the production, with directors and writers etc. being subservient to them, and the producer has the final call on things like script and editing.

But if the director has financed the film themselves then they effectively answer to no one. In this case, they may employ a producer who is then subservient to them, or may even produce the film by themselves. Consider, someone like George Lucas, who owns his own studio.

It's all about collaboration of skills and talent in the end. So identifying and doing the job role of these three factors is vital, therefore.

Sports films and it's vibe

A sport's film is a film genre that uses sport as the theme of a film.

Since hollywood is the leading market in the global cinema there expansion in the genres of films can be considered to be extremely large.

One of their successful genre's are sports movies.

Today's my discussion will discuss the factors related to sports films and it's impact to fans and audiences.

In my opinion a sports documentary will provide knowledge but it will not provide motivation. Since documentaries don't have emotion that films have there is lack of emotional involvement of the audience. A good sports film will provide motivation to the viewers by showing victory over difficulties.

If you seek inspiration in films watch good sports films.

The following are my personal favourites.

American Football

Jerry Maguire (1996)
Any given Sunday (1999)
Invincible (2006)
Gridiron Gang (2006)

Auto racing

Rush (2013)

Baseball

Moneyball (2011)

Wrestling

Foxcatcher (2014)
The Wrestler (2008)

Boxing

Southpaw (2015)
Creed (2015)
Rocky Balboa (2006)
Cinderella man (2005)
Million Dollar baby (2004)
Rocky V (1990)
Rocky (1976)

Martial arts

Warrior (2011)

How I rate a movie ?

Many of the films I have studied in my blog have been given a rating based on the analytical perception I personally obtained through watching films, reading and watching online film reviews.

These reviews are provided based on the independent observations I make in films.

As Sri Lankan film fans we are exposed to Hollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood and even Sinhala films. Therefore the scope of films to a Sri Lankan is very high. But it doesn't mean the fans have an accurate perception about films.

Watching and reviewing films is one of my hobbies. I am a film fan. I have never learned or studied cinema or related subjects ever in my life. So I have no authority in reviewing films.

But since a film is for public entertainment, without any genre specification I review and analyze the films.

To be clear since I'm a 26-year-old my films without any specification of age will provide reviews and therefore it should be clear that any of my recommendations will be better for "18+" and some films may be not suitable for children.

Overall in my ratings in the blog, my biases in reviews are either positive or negative. I have rarely given mediocre reviews to many films.

I have personal biases in films, people hate films like Alien Vs. Predator and Resident Evil, but I personally love them.

I like Paul W.S. Anderson, Joe Carnahan, Zack Snyder, John Woo, Tony Scott, and Robert Rodriguez films which are very unique and one of a kind, but some of their films are not critically or being liked by audiences.

Noir [a genre of crime film or fiction characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity.] and manga [Japanese Comic Books] / anime [Japanese Animation] are personal favorite genres of mine.

I have also sometimes do not grasp metaphors or symbols in films. The recent observation was the concept of the circle of life in The Arrival (2016) which I clearly missed.

I am a fan soo. I don't mind inaccuracies. But it may impact the reader.

My personal factors and things that I believe as a film fan is that I love films that is specific to the film maker or the genre. I like when the film maker creates a film with a different theme but his unique work of art and style. If he maintains and develop his trademark overtime it creates a strong sense of his career growth in perspective and also a good credit of a film under his name.

And also I love when there is strong star power involved in films. When there is a set of actors who are involved in a strong plot and when there is a strong human resource background behind a movie product it is evident the film is going to be an amazing outcome.

So overall my reviews are made based on the personal experience I get from films. So it can defer from one review to review.

The Hunger 2 Unstoppable - Tony Scott : A tribute (1944 - 2012)

Anthony David Leighton "Tony" Scott (1944 - 2012) created a dynamic thriller / action film genre for over two decades and became a distinct film master among the action film fans.

As a Sri Lankan, Tony Scott films was not the iconic films that the locals would get to see in the local television channels or in the movie theatres. His films was the few actions films that I personally took time to find by walking around in shops to purchase.

Why I loved Tony Scott is he made "B" movies.

He made good "B" movies.

"B" movies are made solely on the purpose of commercial gains and attracting audiences to Cinema.

Sometimes commercial filmmakers tend to diversify films according to the global and social changes to satisfy audiences and to earn financial success in box office.

The difference with Tony Scott and his films is he managed to maintain his style throughout his career.

In 2012 August 19 he committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California.

The trademarks of his films can be listed below.

(01) Constantly wore a faded red baseball cap. It often appeared in his films.
(02) He often casted Denzel Washington and Christopher Walken.
(03) [Director's trademark - camera pan across a large tower] the "top of the world" tower at the casino in Domino and beat the devil, the tower in Mexico City at the start of "Man on Fire".
(04) Has used dogs in many of his movies including Top Gun (1986), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), The Fan (1996), Enemy of the state (1998), Man on Fire (2004) and Domino (2005).
(05) Kinetic, choppy editing
(06) Frequently had sunlight flashing at characters to make the picture more effective.
(07) Often ended a film with a shootout. See True Romance (1993), The last boy scout (1991) and Enemy of the state (1998).
(08) An advocate of "Chiaroscuro" cinematographic style (Contrasting lighting).

Tony Scott was a younger brother of director Ridley Scott, partner in Scott Free productions.

And to conclude this tribute to my personal favourite action filmmaker, his films come from a broad range of genres, including the action drama Top Gun (1986), action comedy Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987), auto racing film Days of Thunder (1990), action comedy The Last Boy Scout (1991), romantic dark comedy crime film True Romance (1993), submarine action film Crimson Tide (1995), psychological thriller The Fan (1996), spy thriller Enemy of the state (1998), spy film Spy Game (2001), action thriller Man on Fire (2004), Sci fi action thriller DeJa Vu (2006), thriller The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) and the action thriller Unstoppable (2010).

Master of grandeur : Sir Ridley Scott

Many filmmakers from mainstream hollywood was discussed during my discussions in previous months in my blog posts.

I pointed out Guy Ritchie ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/02/guy-ritchie-style-energy-and-gangsters.html ), David Fincher ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/04/david-fincher-and-his-masterpiece.html ) and Christopher Nolan ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/05/inside-your-mind-christopher-nolan.html )  and how these filmmakers create a unique filmmaking style for themselves.

By these uniqueness these filmmakers were able to impact the global film landscape to attempt innovation, go into new themes and also to take risks in film making financially as well as qualitatively. And as a film fanatic I believe that's what an industry as well as the audience expect from films and the filmmakers.

This month I would like to discuss Sir Ridley Scott.

Any film fanatic would know him for he his one of the controversial film makers in the world who has mastered the mainstream filmmaking with thematic and character driven films.

His films since his beginning The Duellists (1977) to Alien : Covenant (2017)  are huge and epic films with great atmosphere, concentrated visual style, films that range widely in setting and period and also they frequently showcase memorable imagery of urban environments that are filled with film making grandeur.

As a film fan I would call Sir Ridley Scott, The master of grandeur.

Sir Ridley Scott is best known for his science-fiction horror film Alien (1979). His best known works include the neo-noir dystopian sci-fi film Blade Runner (1982), historical drama and best picture award winner Gladiator (2000) and science fiction film The Martian (2015).

Scott as a director nominated for three academy awards for directing (for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down).

In 2003, he was knighted for his "services to the british film industry".

In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London.

As a Sri Lankan many of my country's film fans loves his Gladiator (2000). Like many global film analysts say it is famous for it's revival of the nearly defunct "Sword and sandal" historical genre since epic films like Ben-Hur (1959).

And also I love his Kingdom Of Heaven (2005) for it's detailed portrayal of 12th Century Jerusalem for its emotional storyline and epic grandeur in film making.

His epic film making is how he takes grand themes and huge film settings like wide variety of films and also touch small tiny character driven stories to impact it's evolutionary and revolutionary effects in films.

And I personally like his American Gangster (2007) for it's atmosphere and characters.

And finally he is a filmmaker I believe  personally who entertained and also transformed an industry to take drastic risks and fearlessly change movie making paradigms.

He is a filmmaker not to miss.

Inside your mind : Christopher Nolan

CN or Christopher Nolan is one of the highest-grossing directors in history, and among the most successful and acclaimed filmmakers of the 21st Century.

Sri Lankans also have a wide based fan following to his films and even study the conceptual framework, film making style and his universes in story lines etc.

He became loved among the Sri Lankan fans for his epic reboot to the DC legend "The Batman" in his "The Dark Knight Trilogy" (2005 - 2012).

Why I love him as a film maker personally is his ability to create a sense of awe in the minds of the audience through real cinematography avoiding CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) as much as possible.

Large scale shots covering many sequences into the tiniest details and also his plots twists and story lines are equally enigmatic and unique.

Simply Nolan's films are rooted in philosophical, sociological and ethical concepts, exploring human morality, the construction of time, and the malleable nature of memory and personal identity. His body of work is permeated by materialistic perspectives, labyrinthine plots, non linear story telling, practical special effects and analogous relationships between visual language and narrative elements.

The title of this article is "Inside your mind : Christopher Nolan".

Nolan through his unique editing, character arcs and by manipulating the storyline has been able to expose the internal mindset of the characters and accordingly it's elemental structure.

Following (1998), Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002) reflects on one of the most darkest and his distinct depictions of the human mind and it's nature. Through extremely talented film editing, cinematographic excellence and script he has exposed the human mind and it's variability in a very strong and powerful manner. The strength and the impact to the viewer is with how he manipulates the fate of the actors and the characters step by step through puzzle like storyline.

Like when we analyze Memento (2000) the film explores the mind of a guy with a serious mental illness. And when CN slowly explores the character and puts to the screen at the end of the film when we realize how confused we are in the first viewing on the character and his real psychological darkside as well.

Insomnia (2000) is clearly a film on psychopathy but a more colder and a haunting film with relentlessly dark character arcs and his long landscape shots and close ups he manages to pull off a scary reflection of darkness and the human nature.

The Prestige (2006) does not go into the mind but he reflects through his filmmaking style, music and manipulates the atmospheric of the film to give the audience a vision of the characters and the mindset.

Inception (2010) one of his breakthrough films builds on one of the greatest films ever created which actually literally penetrates a human mind. Some of the film's dream sequences are considered amazingly structured and even strong explanations of actually how a human mind works according psychologists.

CN is a manipulator of the audiences mind through his films. He takes a one step forward in all of his film making. As you watch the films it expands into something bigger thematically, cinematography and even in acting. His ability to twist plots to confuse and surprise audiences and through creating his film's atmospheres to create the storyline in a majestic manner strongly in front of the audiences is one of the audiences is one his unique achievements and that's why you should let CN manipulate your mind.

Memento (2000) : Anything serving as a reminder or warning. [Dictionary.com]

Memento (2000) by Christopher Nolan is one of the breakthrough films of his career and may be one of the greatest films ever made.

Now that the audiences know this what can a Sri Lankan film fan like me can give new to the readers.

Memento is a 2000 american neo-noir psychological thriller film after Nolan's "Following (1998)" which was kind of the same film making which later becomes his world renowned iconic film making style.

Like many of initial films Memento explores the dark human conditions and it's cold heartedness with psychopathy infused. And also he brings his great editing and story telling techniques to the film in a grand scale.

This is a most talked about film and needs multiple viewings, Now with my busy schedules I only watched it once and I'm like really confused but awed by it's film making competence.

The story is about a guy called Leonard as a result of a past trauma, suffers from anterograde amnesia, the inability to form new memories and suffers short-term memory loss approximately every five minutes. He is searching for the persons who attacked him and killed his wife, using an intricate system of Polaroid photographs and tattoos to track information he cannot remember. Memento is presented as two different sequences of scenes interspersed during the film: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order (simulating for the audience the mental state of the protagonist). The two sequences "meet" at the end of the film, producing one complete and cohesive narrative.

As a SL film for me Memento is unique noir classic with it's unique confusing narrative style which later becomes nolanites favourite in his films with haunting music, context, acting and depth. This becomes one of the best films ever put to screen in terms of crime and human condition with unique atmosphere.

Logan (2017) - A 'Wolverine' Finale

Logan (2017) is the final portrayal of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

Hugh was the first wolverine in cinema and he kicked ass.

He created his own trilogy and this is the final installment of his trilogy.

Logan is the very definition of a Wolverine film. It is highly dark and violent with a more noir and western fusion.

Director James Mangold has said that Logan's influences included "Visual reference points" of cinema, citing Shane (1953), The Cowboys (1972), Paper moon (1973), The Gauntlet (1977), Little miss sunshine (2006) and The wrestler (2008). They are very clearly seen when you watch closely.

The conceptual niche's like "Old Man Logan" and "Post X-Men universe" is discussed in Logan.

Overall one of the best films of the X-men universe with reference to Wolverine.

Good bye... Hugh Jackman.... You'll be the best Wolverine ever.

Overall - 4/5

David Fincher and his masterpiece

David Fincher's (DF) masterpiece is Fight Club [FC] (1999).

DF who's one of the most innovative and considered a great film maker himself worked really hard on producing FC.

FC is an american film from 1999 based on the 1996 novel by Chuck Pulahnuik.

The plot of the film is basically in summary is.......

Edward Norton plays the unnamed protagonist, referred to as the narrator, who is discontented with his white-collar job. He forms a "Fight Club" with soap maker Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt, and they are joined by men who also want to fight recreationally. The narrator becomes embroiled in a relationship with Durden and a dissolute woman, Marla Singer, played by Bonham Carter.

The director and the cast compared the film to Rebel without a cause (1955) and The Graduate (1967). They said its theme was the conflict between a generation of young people and the value system of advertising.

This film is a cinematic feast. As a Sri Lankan film fanatic that troubled rebellious men is a talked about factor and loved by film makers and fans alike.

Fight Club's got some hard hitting quotes for the audiences.

Tyler Durden : The things you own end up owning you.

Narrator : I found freedom. Losing all hope was freedom.

Tyler Durden : It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.

Tyler Durden : Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

Narrator : This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.

Tyler Durden : You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking Khakis. You're the all singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

Tyler is like an annihilistic priest. His words are true but dangerous and if you blindly follow them it's chaos. And that is what you see in the film.

DF's approach and style in films are basically follows.

Fincher likes to map out camera movement with computer-generated imagery, commission intricate sets, gets heavily involved in post-production, and re-shoot footage after the principal photography has wrapped. He does not normally use hand-held cameras when he shoots a film, preferring cameras on a tripod, this most frequent use of a hand-held camera was for Se7en, in which five scenes were shot that way. Fincher likes to confuse audiences with his camerawork. Sometimes, it is difficult to determine whether a shot is human-controlled, motion-controlled or computer-generated imagery. Close ups are as little as possible. The interior of a refrigerator can be seen in a number of Fincher's films; this can be seen as part of character and story development.

All of these are in FC.

As a Sri Lankan many films like Machan (2008), Mille Soya[Buongiorno Italia] (2004) and Motor Cycle (2016) depicts the internal and external struggles of the youth and middle aged men of Sri Lanka.

And FC will be the one and only depiction of the American man's perspective in 1990's on consumerism.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - A moment when the filmmaker peaks his tradition

The girl with the dragon tattoo (2011) film is based on Steig Larsson's swedish novel and this is the unforgettable adaptation by David Fincher.

Rather than studying the plot I would like to discuss the film makers tradition of film making.

In summary the film reflects journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Played by Daniel Craig) who is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker (Played by Rooney Mara). The film was nominated for five academy awards and won one academy award for best achievement in film editing.

The both acting performances of lead actors were considered amazing and Rooney Mara was nominated for an oscar for her performance as Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the dragon tattoo.

Now in this discussion on a film maker peaking his tradition in his 2011 film, The discussion on his films in a chronological order will give a more broader perspective on tradition.

David Fincher's debut film Alien 3 was supposed to be a great moment for him to establish himself in the industry. But unfortunately it didn't work out for him. I discuss these factors in my MovieFreak blog years back. (2012 - July)

But he then created one of his best films Se7en (1995), The Game (1997), Fight Club (1999), Panic Room (2002), Zodiac (2007), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2011) and Gone Girl (2014).

Many or all of his films after Alien 3 are his own films that has a distinct iconic DF or David Fincher signature style.

His films in a sense of thematically most of them studies psychopathy and the dark nature of humanity and it's macro level impact to society.

His few films take a different approaches.

His "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)" was considered an amazing poetic and fantasy fused film with reference to the american history and culture with a perspective of a singular individual. Rather than dark themes and the dark atmosphere DF creates films with his unique technical competence which is editing and cinematography. Like "The Big Fish" (2003) where Tim Burton fuses his tradition while "Forrest Gump (1994)" by Robert Zemeckis this DF's singular fictional american story.

"The Social Network (2010)" is the story of "Facebook" may be his best film after his masterpiece "Fight Club (1999)" in my opinion.

Now this article is about TGWTDT(2011). This is a unique film on the darker aspects of human life with reference to the characters discussed in the summary. But like I said since many films of the director are based on the elements of human darkness and he specialises it through acting, editing and cinematography. The greatest technical competence of DF is his use of CGI and TGWTDT (2011) is his greatest film where you can't determine what is real and CGI because he made sure it to be that cool.

And also thematically film maker becomes more and more symphonic in his artwork and in his tradition through heartlessness. And darkness not with atmosphere but with characters and he has peaked it in this film is quite amazing. The filming tone, camera movement and music is bleak and it makes TGWTDT (2011) a peak moment of the filmmakers tradition.

Split (2016) - Claustrophobia

When you watched The Sixth Sense (1999) and Unbreakable (2000), M. Night Shyamalan's best two films and avoid many because you heard them sucked and then watch 2 random films like The Happening (2008) and After Earth (2013) which happens to be worse you see a clear decline in a director's talent.

And then in 2016 he directs Split which is one of the greatest recoveries from earlier failures and how he expands his first cinematic universe from Unbreakable (2000) characters where he re-establishes the true M. Night Shyamalan film making style.

If you watch M. Night Shyamalan's film there is a unique way of approach of tapping the character's internal struggles and psychology.

After his two films Unbreakable (2000) and The Sixth Sense (1999) he failed to maintain this streak until Split, where the film making returns to a darker psychological aspects of a person who has split personality disorder. Kevin played by James Mcavoy plays a person with 24 distinct personality disorders living inside of him and the characters played by Mcavoy is a very strong depiction of a person having psychological problems.

The best thing on this film is it's dark and atmosphere nature giving a claustrophobic experience to the viewers through dark and cinematic style unique to M. Night where he failed earlier but succeeded in Split (2016).

So overall this is going to be a great M. Night Shyamalan film experience.

Films that talk about films

Films that talk about films is something like you're an accountant and now rather than just entering the relevant entries you will pass and approve and also will involve in accounting decision making related to long run liquidity and profitability of the organization you work to. So basically watching films that talk about films is taking your fandom to films into another level.

Now to give a head start this article is going to be a personal experience and some things reflected in the article may be reflected in a manner in which may feel the reader alienated not knowing the facts which is inherent because it is going to be next level of experience cinema.

There are many films about films. Hugo is a film that reflects upon the silent film era. It is Martin Scorsese's first 3D film and a reflection of the silent films and the people's love for cinema. My week with Marilyn is depiction of Marilyn Monroe's life. Son of Rambow is a film on two little boys taking on the "Rambo : First Blood".

There are many other films that discusses about film making. King Kong (2005) the origin film of monster film making and it's last reboot in 2005 defined the genre of becoming a classic monster flick. The life aquatic with Steve Zissou is the world of Wes Anderson expanding into the wild life documentary making. The holiday is a comic approach to the lives of people who are involved in the hollywood film making.

There are many films about hollywood. Hollywood is now the epicenter of commercial filmmaking and if there are no films about hollywood that is going to be a big loophole. The Artist is a modern take on the silent films to films with sound transition. Singing in the rain gave a more technical and musical depiction of some artwork in a different manner when it was released in the 1960's. Sunset Boulevard is the first noir film about hollywood taking on the darker aspects of hollywood. Hail! Caesar!, Entourage, La La Land, Get Shorty and Maps to the Stars are also a dark and fun films on hollywood.

Films about film directors and producers are also a niche factor on films about films. Blair witch project and Blair Witch are two fantasy horror flicks on the documentary film making woven around the relevant filmmakers and they're terrifying experience related to it. This is considered a monumental filmmaking achievement due to it's low budget nature and revenue generation during the period. Films like Ed Wood, Hitchcock, Maestro,The Odyssey relates to real life film making of the world's greatest filmmakers and their art work.

The Player and Knight of Cups are considered as great cinematographic film making achievements on films on films.

Saving Mr. Banks is a unique take on the back story of Walt Disney and his production of Mary Poppins.

Nine is an amazing film that fuses musical style with modern filmmaking mix on the filmmaking of 8 1/2 by Federico Fellini, one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.

Hollywood ending is a Woody Allen film on his take on the Hollywood, directors and producers.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya is a tamil film making and a tragedy related to it.

The list on actors and stunt performers are my personal favourite films. Being John Malkovich, The Congress, Life and Me and Orson Welles are considered one of the greatest fantasy fused films with realism on actors lives. FAN (2016) is Shah Rukh Khan's revelation of a hindi film in years.

Films like Ghost Rider, The Fall (2006) and The Drive (2011) are considered to be my personal favourites on stunt performers due to its creativity and uniqueness. They all discuss the factors of fusion of fantasy and reality.

Barton Fink, The Majestic and Midnight in Paris are films about screenwriters. These also discusses the factors of darkness and it's fusion on the struggle of reality and fantasy of the screen writer characters of the film.

And there is this filmmaking style which is self-reflexive films where the category deals with any metafictional (is a literary device used self-consciously and systematically to draw attention to a work's status as a work of imagination, (rather than reality). Films that are self-aware (is the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals), The fourth wall (is a performance convention in which an invisible, imagined wall separates actors from the audience), or are centered on the creation of themselves.

Films like Adaptation, Annie Hall, Birdman, Inland Empire, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Seven Psychopaths, Stranger than fiction and Taste of a Cherry reflects on the self-reflexive films in a deep manner.

Porn is a negative side effect of Cinema. These are discussed in films like Boogie Nights, Don Jon, Lovelace and The Nice Guys discusses these factors.

Many of these films about films is a great revelation to film fans because it opens your eyes on cinema. So if you love films why not take it to another level.
