Master of grandeur : Sir Ridley Scott

Many filmmakers from mainstream hollywood was discussed during my discussions in previous months in my blog posts.

I pointed out Guy Ritchie ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/02/guy-ritchie-style-energy-and-gangsters.html ), David Fincher ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/04/david-fincher-and-his-masterpiece.html ) and Christopher Nolan ( http://dimademoviefreak.blogspot.com/2017/05/inside-your-mind-christopher-nolan.html )  and how these filmmakers create a unique filmmaking style for themselves.

By these uniqueness these filmmakers were able to impact the global film landscape to attempt innovation, go into new themes and also to take risks in film making financially as well as qualitatively. And as a film fanatic I believe that's what an industry as well as the audience expect from films and the filmmakers.

This month I would like to discuss Sir Ridley Scott.

Any film fanatic would know him for he his one of the controversial film makers in the world who has mastered the mainstream filmmaking with thematic and character driven films.

His films since his beginning The Duellists (1977) to Alien : Covenant (2017)  are huge and epic films with great atmosphere, concentrated visual style, films that range widely in setting and period and also they frequently showcase memorable imagery of urban environments that are filled with film making grandeur.

As a film fan I would call Sir Ridley Scott, The master of grandeur.

Sir Ridley Scott is best known for his science-fiction horror film Alien (1979). His best known works include the neo-noir dystopian sci-fi film Blade Runner (1982), historical drama and best picture award winner Gladiator (2000) and science fiction film The Martian (2015).

Scott as a director nominated for three academy awards for directing (for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down).

In 2003, he was knighted for his "services to the british film industry".

In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London.

As a Sri Lankan many of my country's film fans loves his Gladiator (2000). Like many global film analysts say it is famous for it's revival of the nearly defunct "Sword and sandal" historical genre since epic films like Ben-Hur (1959).

And also I love his Kingdom Of Heaven (2005) for it's detailed portrayal of 12th Century Jerusalem for its emotional storyline and epic grandeur in film making.

His epic film making is how he takes grand themes and huge film settings like wide variety of films and also touch small tiny character driven stories to impact it's evolutionary and revolutionary effects in films.

And I personally like his American Gangster (2007) for it's atmosphere and characters.

And finally he is a filmmaker I believe  personally who entertained and also transformed an industry to take drastic risks and fearlessly change movie making paradigms.

He is a filmmaker not to miss.
